Why templates kill independent brands

You didn't start a coffee shop, a record store, a skatepark to blend in. You started it to mean something. Then you went looking for a logo, and every option looked the same.

The template problem

Most design aimed at independent businesses follows the same logic: keep it safe, keep it simple, keep it cheap. A template. A font pairing everyone's seen. A colour palette that won't offend anyone (and won't excite anyone either).

That's not a design problem. It's a confidence problem. Templates exist because someone decided independent businesses don't need branding with real intent behind it. So the industry built a shortcut, and independent businesses got handed the shortcut as if it were the standard.

It isn't. It's just what's easy to sell at scale.

What gets lost

A template can't know that your coffee shop started because you couldn't find anywhere that felt like home. It can't know that your record store is where three generations of the same family have been buying vinyl for twenty years. It can't know what your skatepark means to the kids who show up every day after school.

Branding built from a template doesn't just look generic — it actively hides the thing that makes a business worth choosing over the one next door. And for independent businesses, that difference is the entire advantage. You don't have a chain's marketing budget. You have something a chain can't buy: a reason people actually care.

No shrinking the ambition

Big brands get design built around who they actually are — thinking that matches the size of their ambition, not the size of their budget. Independent businesses deserve exactly the same starting point. Big thinking, matched to businesses with big ideas, wherever they're starting from.

No templates. No shrinking the ambition. Just work that matches the boldness you already have.
